Introduction: for the World Health Organization, periodontal disease is a public health problem demanding an adequate stomatologic services planning and organization for its solution. Objective: to determine the periodontal treatment need in patients of Jovellanos municipality, Matanzas Province. Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed in five doctor offices patients of Jovellanos municipality, from June 2009 to June 2010. In a universe of 500 patients, a multistage cluster sampling was applied in two stages, taking into account the informed consent. Age (completed years), presence of periodontal disease (yes / no), need for treatment (IPC) variables were studied. Corrected and standardized residuals were determined. Results: 58.4 % of individuals aged 6 to 11 years do not required periodontal treatment (IPC 0). In the 12 to 14 years old group, 46.5 %, needed dental prophylaxis and brushing  training (CPI 1). In IPC 2, there it was a 66 % predominance of the patients aged 15 to 18 years, needing treatment 1 plus scaling and root planning. 41.1% of the 60 to 74 years old patients presented IPC 3 with similar treatment needs, and the CPI 4 was more common in the 35 to 44 age group (66.6 %), including periodontal surgery, in addition to the above treatment. Most of the patients elder 35 years, had four or more segments affected. Segments with missing teeth predominated in the 60-74-years-old group. Conclusions: surface inmunoinflammatory chronic periodontal disease predominated in the 15 to 18 age group, and the deep one in 60-to-74-years-old patients. The number of ill segments increased with age. The most need periodontal treatment was dental prophylaxis and training in brushing, plus scaling and root planning.
