The present work was carried out with the aim of summarizing some aspects -the most important ones- of the first 45 years of high medical teaching history in the province and also of the current University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas. Historical facts related with the theme are given, and the role played by professors and students in the achieved results is recognized.
