LIMA ALVAREZ, Magda y CASANOVA RIVERO, Yanett. Fear, Anxiety and phobia to dentistry treatment. Rev Hum Med [online]. 2006, vol.6, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1727-8120.
To dentistry consultation many patients go with fear to the treatment and to the dental armchair. That is why we were motivated to revise literature to establish the difference of the terms we use to refer to these dental situations, to specify their prevaling according to age and sex, to relate the ethiology and their possible treatments, as well as their prevention. We found out that fear, anxiety and dental phobia prevail between the 5 to 31º.5% of the population, and increase with age, without significant differences of sex. The most frequent ethiologies are past traumatic experiences and the learned attitude of their environment. The treatments include anxiety control with therapy of behavior and medicine. In prevention it should be kept in mind the advice to patients to surpass the fear to dentistry and the odontologist responsibility, the required qualities of the treatment team and the characteristics of the dental clinic.
