From a more integrating viewpoint, the article presents a historical analysis of neurosurgery, taking into consideration both its epistemological evolution and current paradigm. The limitations of determinism in neurosurgical practice are justified. It points out the necessity of a multi-causal approach for the discipline, as well as taking up transdisciplinary working styles and changing the professional education system.
