Abstract

Objective:

to characterize the vocational guidance of the first year students in the medical studies performed in university of Medicine of Camaguey.

Methods:

cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from January to February 2018. The universe of study was 777 students of the first year of Medicine from who 408 made up the final sample.

Results:

the main reasons to opt for the medical career was "helping people and preference for medical career"; the main qualities that health professionals may have are humanism and solidarity.

Discussion:

vocational guidance activities were inadequate or void, all of which shows that there are difficulties in this area and the need of new strategies to support the formation of a relevant physician.
