Abstract

Background: The general understanding and application of biomechanical factors ensure a functional, biocompatible and aesthetic prosthetic rehabilitation. Objective: To identify the biomechanical factors related to the outcome of rehabilitation through fixed partial denture by Implant Microdent System. Methods: A representative comparative study was conducted from September 2007 to May 2009. The sample consisted of 100 patients for a total number of 250 implants. Pearson’s chi square test and Mantel-Haenszel’s linear trend test were used to establish the association between the variables and to determine the relative risk. Results: The rehabilitation through fixed partial denture by Implant Microdent System was successful in 66% of the sample. Rehabilitation was not achieved in 100% of patients with poor oral hygiene, and in 84.2% of patients rehabilitated through non-axial implants. The risk of failure is more than 6 times higher in patients with non-axial implants. Rehabilitation failed also in 100% of patients with inadequate and occlusal surfaces and with interference. Patients who carry occlusal interference are 10.4 times at more risk of prosthetic rehabilitation failure than those who do not carry it. Conclusions: The direct influence of biomechanical factors in achieving a successful implant prosthetic rehabilitation is crucial. Therefore, rehabilitators should ensure compliance with the established standards for each case.
