Background: Retinopathy of prematurity includes among its risk factors: birth weight, gestational age and oxygen use. Early diagnosis is crucial. Objective: To characterize infants with risk factors and early diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity. Methods: Observational, descriptive and correlational study, conducted between January and December 2006 at the General University Hospital "Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" by the Neonatology Service. In the study, 47 preterm infants weighing less than 1700 g and presenting a gestational age below 35 weeks were included. All patients underwent mydriatic fundus examination through the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope method. Results: Retinopathy was diagnosed in 9 neonates (19, 1%), all in stage 1 and zone 3; 46.8% of births were between 30 and 32 weeks and weighing over 1501 grams; 97, 1% of them needed to use oxygen at birth. Conclusions: All children who developed the disease presented one or more risk factors.
