IGLESIAS DIAZ, Gladys; GARCIA GARCIA, Iván  y  CORREA MARTINEZ, Luisbel. Clinical and Epidemiological Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Colloid Goiter Patients Undergoing Reoperation for Recurrent Thyroid Disease. Medisur [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.5, pp.622-629. ISSN 1727-897X.

Background: thyroid disease is one of the most prevalent medical conditions and thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine neoplasm. Thyroid reoperations are more common than it might seem. Objective: to establish the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients operated on for colloid goiter undergoing reoperation for recurrent thyroid disease. Methods: a case-series study was conducted at the León Cuervo Rubio Clinical-Surgical Hospital in Pinar del Rio. The sample included all patients (n = 29) who underwent thyroid operation and were reoperated on for recurrent thyroid disease in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The information was obtained from medical records and the register of histopathological diagnoses. Results: most patients (27.6%) were in the 40-49 age group and females (79.3%) were most affected. Recurrence was observed 5 to 9 years after surgery. Mixed nodules (55.2%) followed by cysts (17.2%) were the most frequent ultrasound diagnoses. Recurrent thyroid disease was malignant in 9% of patients. Conclusions: patients reoperated on for thyroid disease were mostly females in the fourth and fifth decade of life. The disease recurred in a period of 10 years after the first surgery in a greater number of cases. Follicular-patterned lesions, colloid goiter and cancer were the most common histologic diagnosis.
