Background: the study of the pathogenesis and risk factors for hip fracture can contribute to the design of prevention strategies and the optimization of its management before and after surgery. Objective: to describe the results of continued care for hip fracture patients. Methods: a case series study of patients admitted for hip fracture was conducted at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital in Cienfuegos during the second half of 2012. One hundred forty four patients were analyzed. The study variables included: age, sex, variables related to the situation prior to the fracture, type of fracture, treatment and variables related to the follow-up. The information was obtained from the patients’ medical records. Results: the mean age was 75 to 84 years and females (68%) predominated. Ninety three percent of the patients needed no support for walking before the fracture, 89% had one or more associated diseases. Extracapsular fractures were observed in 67% of the cases. Sixty two percent underwent surgery within 24 hours of the injury. Orthopedic complications accounted for 7%.Conclusion: continued care provided to hip fracture patients in Cienfuegos province has allowed achieving satisfactory results. The variables analyzed have shown to be factors that ensure quality of care and a better prognosis for these patients.
