An educational strategy was designed and implemented to care for a patient with atrophy Muscular spinal type I, who has survived six years in ventilatory support, two of these at home. Empirical methods were used to design the strategy: documentary analysis and participant observation; and theoretical methods: analytical - synthetic, inductive - deductive, historical-logical, systemic and modeling. Results: An educational strategy was designed and implemented, organized in four stages: assessment, planning, execution and evaluation which solved practical problems with time and resources optimization in relation to the child care with home mechanical ventilation; A qualitative change was evidenced with the incorporation of health professionals to the family dynamics. Conclusion: Integrating health care different levels allowed nursing intervention focused on the child’s illness and the particular needs of the family of knowing how to provide care in relation to ventilatory support at home.
