MARTIN ARDILA MEDINA, Carlos  y  GUZMAN ZULUAGA, Isabel Cristina. Association between tongue piercing and gingival recession. Rev haban cienc méd [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.4. ISSN 1729-519X.

Recently, the use of oral and facial piercing has risen dramatically. Some case reports and very few clinical studies have associated damage to the oral piercing. In the oral cavity piercing is mainly used in the lip and tongue. Different pathological conditions are associated with the use of oral piercing, including edema, pain, swelling, trismus, foreign body reactions, Ludwig's angina, broken teeth, infections and trauma mucogingival. It is difficult to identify or predict the prevalence and frequency of complications and adverse consequences associated with tongue piercing because of the small literature on the matter. This article reports two cases of tongue piercing which caused lingual gingival recession on lower incisors. A dentist's primary duty, is to advice patients about the adverse effects produced by oral piercings on different parts of the mouth.
