Introduction: Business and computer applications are affected by the rapid and continuing changes in business environment. Medical applications handle large number of rules to make decisions that require high precision. Specialists need to understand easily the systems to adapt them to new conditions. Objective: The goal of this article is to apply the business rules approach (BRA) in the development of information systems (IS) in order to enable the use of medical language to capture the requirements. Material and methods: The development stage of this paper uses the available literature on the subject, and specialists' interviews to identify a broad set of business rules (BR). Results. This work shows the development of an application for monitoring patients in the kidney transplantation area using this approach, which facilitate the challenge of upgrading systems to new conditions imposed by medical advances. Conclusions: These results show the effectiveness and validity of the capture of BR from the perspective of business users.
