The current transformer that was located in the neutral of the capacitor bank of the bus section 3A-3B of the Tallapiedra 110/13,8 kV substation was completely destroyed, and some units were also damaged, starting by a phase to neutral short-circuit and ending as a three phase short-circuit. Using mathematical modeling, several scenarios were simulated to find the cause for which this equipment failed. It was found that it was not capable of withstand the dynamic current that was experience for each of the scenarios that were analyzed. Properly dimensioning the overcurrent dynamic capacity for these equipments is of vital importance to prevent failures like the one that occurred or change the type of current transformer for a window or toroidal type, since the primary current does not physically circulate through these.
