In this paper it is explained the utility of a diagnosis when starting the software process improvement, using the critical factors of success to identify the strengths and weaknesses of undertaking the change. The authors present a proposal of the diagnostic process, the indicators and how they consider the critical factors of success. It is explained how to improve the diagnostic phase and the techniques applied in this area in order to identify the status of the organization integrally and to assess the conditions for starting the initiative. The results permit the organizations to have the main elements that influence the process of change management. It is confirmed the importance of the comprehensive diagnosis related to the critical factors of success and it is demonstrated how to do it
