Abstract

The product or component design constitutes a difficult, complex and multidisciplinary activity, focused to the resolution of problems. Presently work show the development of an automated tool for the selection of the more used steels in the construction of machineries. The tool constitute a help for the selection of the materials from the conceptual stage of the design process, where the different categories of materials are identified to use. The tool analyze the characteristics and more common properties of the available steels in six international standards: JIS (Japan), DIN, Vbn, DIN-Vbn (Germany), GOST (Russia), AISI, SAE, AISI-SAE, ASTM (USA), BS, IN, GB (England), AFNOR (France) and NC (Cuba).
