GONZALEZ-REY, Gonzalo. Influence of oil lubrication on cylindrical worm gear efficiency. Ingeniería Mecánica [online]. 2013, vol.16, n.1, pp. 13-21. ISSN 1815-5944.
In this study, a general procedure is proposed for the prediction of cylindrical worm gear efficiency taking into account friction losses between worm and wheel gear, three base oils and lubrication system. The validation of procedure was achieved by comparing with values of efficiency for worm gear units referenced by a German gear manufacturer company. In the case of worm gears lubricated with synthetic base oils, results show an strong dependency between basic coefficient of friction and sliding velocity up to 0,4 m/s and for dip lubrication with mineral oils the basic coefficient of friction was observed constant for sliding velocity below 0,9 m/s. Other results confirm the increase of worm gear efficiency at approximately 44 % when gears are lubricated with synthetic oils in substitution of mineral oils. Finally, an important recommendation to calculate a rational module for maximum worm gear efficiency with synthetic lubrication is presented.
