The objective of this paper is to provide a computational algorithm to predictcavitation within the lubricant of a journal bearing subjected to parallel misalignment. The device consists of an external cylinder surrounding a rotating shaft, both separated by a lubricant to prevent contact. An axial supply groove is considered as well as a parallel misalignment. The unknowns of the problem are the lubricant pressure field, satisfying the Reynolds cavitation model, and the force exerted by this. The problem is solved by the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, modified with both projection and restarting strategies to account for cavitation. The numerical approach takes advantage of the underlying mathematical model and provides another way of solution to the related problem, different from the ones that exist in the literature.
