Resumen

MARRERO PENICHE, Gretel. Cuban migration to the United States under the gender eye: research results. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.21, pp. 38-48. ISSN 1817-4078.

The article is in response to the need to evaluate the participation of women in the migration process in Cuba, specifically to the United States. As a starting point two elements are basically taken into account. First, female supremacy in Cuban emigration to various destinations since 1995, reversing this fact alone during the called ‘immigration crisis’. Second, the United States continues to perform as the main destination of Cuban emigration. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to evaluate gender differences, manifest or latent, in Cuban migration process to the United States during the years 2000 to 2010. For this purpose, a quantitative research methodology was used predominantly, but took into account elements of the qualitative perspective with the intent to obtain a more comprehensive view of the subject matter, essentially in the analysis of the results. Main research results pointed to: the dominance of white persons in Cuban migration flows to the United States, excelling in the case of women; the age composition of the study sample indicated a majority of young people, where the trend indicated a reduction in age from leaving the country of origin between years (2000-2010). On gender differences, the main results could be identified in the female predominance in elements such as the coincidence of the country of residence of the migrant children as well as in monthly remittances to the country of origin.

Palabras clave : Cuba; United States; gender; international migration.
