Resumen

RODRIGUEZ GOMEZ, Grisell  y  ALBIZU-CAMPOS ESPINEIRA, Juan Carlos. Cuban population today. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.22. ISSN 1817-4078.

The Cuban population change should not be perceived as a problem or a challenge but it should be addressed in a framework of interaction with economic and social development. Therefore, nothing that happens in terms of policy today supports a fragmented view as far as demography is concerned. It does not mean that no action could be drawn or carried out in that sense, but certainly, it is vital that any action must be handled from the perspective of its systemic impact on population dynamics. This paper focuses on the analysis of the behavior of the Cuban population through the explanation of the evolution of its determinants: mortality, fertility and migration, in a scenario of real decline in the number of people in a society that is immersed in an important set of changes, adjustments and challenges, placing the issue in an analytical plan that exceeds the exclusive study of the demographic traits from only its macro-level indicators to reclaim the need of addressing the specific incidence of the cultural and the social, as well as its attention from policy.

Palabras clave : Cuban Population; Demographic dynamics; mortality; fertility; migration.
