Abstract

BENITEZ PEREZ, María Elena. A demographic approach to the Cuban marriage market. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2016, vol.12, n.24, pp.53-60. ISSN 1817-4078.

The composition of the "marriage market" can be observed with greater precision when considering the conjugal situation of the people, according to their sex and age, since those who are not married can act as suppliers and/or demanders in this area. Based on census information, the present study analyzes, through the masculinity index, the composition by gender and five-year age groups of the Cuban population during the period between the censuses of 1931 and 2012. The outputs indicate important imbalances, first, with an "excess of men" and in the last decades with an "excess of women". Everything indicates that it is the migration the demographic variable responsible for the imbalances that are observed in the indices of masculinity.

Keywords : censuses of population; index of masculinity; marriage market.
