Abstract

BELLO EXPOSITO, Elizabeth. Communication in population: ¡Ahora! Newspaper, Holguín, Cuba. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.25, pp.17-31. ISSN 1817-4078.

At present, the category communication in population is a concept in progress and barely researched. The media still lack the necessary understanding of the need for communication on these issues. In Cuba, with an accelerated, early and complete demographic transition and low fertility indicators, with a direct impact on the age structure of the population, among other demographic challenges, knowledge of demographic processes and phenomena is required. Thence, the importance of this article, which proposes an analysis of the links between demographic science and communication, indispensable for the understanding, impulse and transformation of any social project, considering the population as object and subject of development and considering the social and cultural function of the media. The study focuses on the approach of demographic dynamics of Cuba and the territory of Holguín by the province´s newspaper, Ahora! (Now!), of weekly circulation. In the local newspaper, the demographic dynamics of the province and Cuba are not very visible, because population issues are poorly treated and the articles that show them lack the effective and integral explanatory elements for their analysis, are mixed inadequately with other issues, and the territorial dynamics are not particularized. In the same way, the available national information is not used to inform the local population about what is happening in the country.

Keywords : Communication in population; demographic culture; demographic dynamics; education; newspaper.
