PEREZ MONTERO, Ofelia et al. When women migrate. A look at internal migration, from the perspective of sustainable development, in the coastal municipality of Guamá, Santiago de Cuba. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.28, pp.13-25.  Epub 24-Maio-2019. ISSN 1817-4078.

The objective of the article is to explain the impact of internal population migration on the dimensions of sustainable development, from a gender perspective. An exploratory type research was carried out, using the qualitative method. The techniques of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, content analysis and discussion groups were applied. The results showed that women move to the interior of the municipality and migrate more than men to more developed municipalities in the country. The causes are associated with the search for economic improvements and professional development, divorces, marriages, among others, wich generate a significant impact on the dimensions of sustainable development in this coastal municipality. They emphasize in the economic dimension, the abandonment of highly productive areas in the mountains, and the loss of skilled labor and with it the de-qualification of some community services. In the social dimension, factors such as the loss of potential leaders in business management, and community and institutional management, the non-coverage of specialized positions in some areas of the mountain. While in the environmental dimension, it is significant the occupation of sensitive spaces in the coastal zone for the location of their homes, generating vulnerabilities to the penetration of the sea by the effect of extreme weather events. Finally, migrations have an impact on gender relations, generating some imbalances in households, and changes in family care strategies when women migrate.
