Cuba fue uno de los países que más tempranamente iniciaron su transición demográfica, producto del significativo descenso de la fecundidad, el aumento de la expectativa de vida y el persistente saldo migratorio negativo. Este proceso condujo a un vertiginoso y homogéneo envejecimiento de la estructura por edad de su población. El objetivo de esta contribución consiste en mostrar al envejecimiento como un logro inobjetable, pero que entraña desafíos en términos de los derechos de las personas mayores, las dinámicas familiares y el cuidado. El trabajo se apoya en la revisión documental, la confrontación de distintas investigaciones, el enfoque histórico-lógico y el manejo de información censal y datos provenientes de encuestas. Las políticas sociales han propiciado que la mayoría de los adultos mayores cubanos tengan salud y calidad de vida, gocen de respeto y reconocimiento en el seno familiar, como resultado de los valores instaurados por la educación y la solidaridad; pero nuestras leyes tienen que extender disposiciones que regulen explícitamente el actuar con respecto a los ancianos, y de las posibilidades reales que tienen las personas mayores de ejercer sus derechos. La familia cubana hoy es menos numerosa. Su dinamismo y los arreglos al interior del hogar cubano no pocas veces afectan la convivencia doméstica, generan conflictos, presionan los recursos y los servicios de la vivienda. Surgen tensiones intergeneracionales y, en particular, sobre las personas de edad. La eminente fragilidad y dependencia de los adultos mayores conduce a una creciente demanda de cuidados, atención y protección social.

Cuba was one of the countries that started its demographic transition earlier, as a result of the significant decline in fertility, the increase in life expectancy and the persistent negative migratory balance. This process led to a vertiginous and homogeneous aging of the age structure of its population. The objective of this contribution is to show aging as an unobjectionable achievement, but one that involves challenges in terms of elderly rights, family dynamics and care. The article is based on the documentary review, the confrontation of different investigations, the historical-logical approach and the handling of census information and surveys data. The social policies have favored that the majority of the Cuban elderly have health and quality of life, enjoy respect and recognition within the family, as a result of the values ​​established by education and solidarity. However, our laws have to extend norms that explicitly regulate acting with respect to the elderly, and of the real possibilities that older people have to exercise their rights. The Cuban family today is less numerous. Their dynamism, and the arrangements within the Cuban home, not infrequently affect domestic coexistence, generate conflicts, pressure resources and housing services. Intergenerational tensions arise, and in particular, over the elderly. The eminent fragility and dependence of the elderly lead to an increasing demand for care, attention and social protection.
