La violencia en las relaciones de pareja, como caso particular de la que ocurre en el ámbito intrafamiliar, ha sido un tema poco explorado en Cuba. La información disponible revela que los estudios realizados al respecto no han sido representativos de toda la población ni permiten conocer la magnitud real en que se presenta este fenómeno. Esta problemática motivó la realización del presente artículo que tiene como propósito mostrar la magnitud en que se presenta el referido proceso en las relaciones de pareja estables en el país y explorar algunas variables asociadas.

Para tal fin se utilizó la Encuesta sobre Indicadores de Prevención de Infección por VIH/sida que se aplicó en el año 2013, representativa de toda la población cubana de 12 a 49 años residente en el territorio nacional; incluyendo en su cuestionario un módulo de preguntas que permitieron identificar si la persona había sido víctima de violencia física, sexual o psicológica por parte de su pareja en un período de referencia de un año. Logró conocerse así que la violencia afecta a más de la mitad de las parejas cubanas, independientemente de que la reciba el hombre o la mujer, o de las características sociodemográficas a las que estén asociados los mismos, aunque se detectaron pequeñas diferencias al respecto que serán aquí analizadas.

Domestic violence in partner relationships, particularly what happens in the intrafamily setting, has been a little studied topic in Cuba. Available information reveals that studies on this topic have not been representative of the whole population nor do they allow an understanding of the real magnitude where this phenomenon is present. This social issue is the motive of this article, having the purpose of showing the magnitude in which the referred process occurs in stable partner relationships in the country and to explore some associated variables.

For this purpose, the Survey on Prevention Indicators for HIV/aids Infection that was conducted in 2013, representative of the whole population of Cuba aged 12-49 who reside in the country was used. Included in the survey was a set of questions that identified whether the person had been a victim of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse by their partner in the period of reference of the previous year. In this way it was known that violence affects more than half of Cuban couples, regardless of whether it is received by the man or the woman, or of the social demographic characteristics to which the aforementioned are associated, although small differences were detected regarding this that will be analyzed here.
