En el último decenio, Loreto se ha distinguido por ser un destino con una marcada orientación al turismo de naturaleza: esta situación, unida a la ventaja que le proporciona ser denominado Pueblo Mágico, le brinda la oportunidad de detonar un modelo de desarrollo turístico más incluyente y sustentable, con una gran diferencia respecto del modelo tradicional, masivo y de sol y playa que se aplica en Los Cabos, y que ha propiciado un desarrollo excluyente y escasamente integrado desde la perspectiva económica, sectorial, social y territorial. La investigación corresponde a un estudio exploratorio, considerando dos periodos de análisis: los años 2000 y 2015, para lo cual se utilizan técnicas de estadística descriptiva analítica, fundamentadas en la metodología de los indicadores de desarrollo sustentable para destinos turísticos de la Organización Mundial del Turismo. Este artículo tiene por objetivos: en primer término, describir el desarrollo turístico y valorar su impacto económico, ambiental y social; y, segundo, analizar la factibilidad de implementar un modelo de desarrollo fundamentado en el turismo de naturaleza, a partir de un análisis de sus potencialidades y limitaciones, considerando como área de estudio el Pueblo Mágico de Loreto, Baja California Sur. Los resultados refieren que el destino reporta mejores indicadores en los ámbitos que valoran la calidad de vida, desarrollo urbano y social, así como en los beneficios económicos que genera el turismo; sin embargo, en los indicadores de sustentabilidad ambiental y de competitividad turística se registra un relativo retroceso en la evaluación comparativa de 2000 y 2015.

In the last decade, Loreto has distinguished itself as a destination with a marked orientation to nature tourism: this situation, together with the advantage of by being considered as Pueblo Mágico, offers the opportunity to detonate a more inclusive tourism development model and sustainable, with a big difference from the traditional, massive and sun and beach model that is applied in Los Cabos, and that has led to an exclusionary and poorly integrated development from the economic, sectoral, social perspective and territorial. The research corresponds to an exploratory study, considering two periods of analysis: the years 2000 and 2015 for which descriptive analytical statistics techniques are used, based on the methodology of sustainable development indicators for tourist destinations of the World Tourism Organization. This article aims, first, to describe tourism development and assess its economic, environmental and social impact and, second, to analyze the feasibility of implementing a development model based on nature tourism, based on an analysis of its potentialities and limitations, considering as an area of ​​study the town Pueblo Mágico of Loreto, Baja California Sur. The results refer that the destination reports better indicators in the areas that value the quality of life, urban and social development, as well as in the economic benefits generated by tourism; however, in the indicators of environmental sustainability and tourism competitiveness there is a relative setback in the benchmarking of 2000 and 2015.
