Resumen

MARTIN PASTRANA, Ailyn. Participation of emigrants in the private sector of the Cuban economy. Study of cases. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.36, pp. 520-545.  Epub 30-Nov-2022. ISSN 1817-4078.

In the 2011-2019 period, the Cuban government undertook a series of reforms aimed at adopting a more flexible economic model, focused on development. The reorganization process included the adoption of new legislation, as was the case of the Lineamientos de la política económica y social delPartido y la Revolución (2011), the updating and expansion of the Self-Employment (Trabajo por Cuenta Propia, TCP) legislation (2011),the update of the Immigration Law (2012), and the approval of the newConstitution of the Republic (2019). These changes in the legislative order allowed the growth of the TCP. A segment of the Cuban emigration participates in the development of said sector, through investment flows and cultural exchange, which the typical definitions of remittances do not fully cover. The research, of an exploratory nature, identifies through a case study which are the ways that emigrants use to participate in the private sector, as well as the political and economic factors that conditioned said activity. It addresses the transnational perspective for the Cuban case, as well as the different empirical studies that serve to analyze remittances and their uses in the context of the Island. The conclusions of the article show that the direct participation of emigrants in the private economy has supposed the implementation of new ways of conceiving/doing business, their structure, as well as their projection towards the market.

Palabras clave : Cuban emigration; private sector; economic participation; transnationalism.
