Pregnancy is an important condition that can affect and can be affected by ankylosing spondylitis. In general, ankylosing spondylitis does not appear to interfere negatively with fertility, pregnancy, the fetus or breastfeeding. It is estimated that about 85-90 % of ankylosing spondylitis patients have a term pregnancy. On the other hand, an increase in Cesarean sections has been reported in ankylosing spondylitis. With regard to changes in disease activity during pregnancy, it has been reported that 30-55 % of ankylosing spondylitis patients experience no significant changes while about 24-33 % worsen, most often in the second trimester.
