BASANTES COLCHA, Raúl Alexis; TARAPUEZ PASMINO, Jhon Neider; ALVAREZ CARRION, Sonia Alexandra  e  CARRERA QUIMBITA, Paul Alejandro. Aerobic exercises as physiotherapeutic treatment of gonarthrosis in the elderly. Rev Cuba Reumatol [online]. 2023, vol.25, n.4  Epub 01-Dez-2023. ISSN 1817-5996.

Gonarthrosis or knee osteoarthritis is the most prevalent joint disease in the elderly, more frequently in women. Age is the first risk factor for suffering from it, in addition, a sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity are factors that increase vulnerability and the burden of disability. Physical exercise is the first-line therapeutic treatment and aerobic exercise is recognized for its beneficial effects, when used alone or in combination. The objective is to analyze the effectiveness of aerobic exercises as a physiotherapeutic treatment for gonarthrosis in the elderly. For this, a basic, non-experimental and descriptive investigation was carried out, consisting of a non-systematic bibliographic review. The universe consisted of 39 documents of which 23 were part of the research sample; these documents published in Google Scholar, Scielo, Latindex, Redalyc, Ice Web and PubMed in the last ten years. The main contributions describe the risk factors of the disease, the importance of carrying out exercises and the benefits of aerobic exercise in controlling the clinical manifestations of the disease. It is concluded that the most reported aerobic exercises are walking on land and water; generating pain relief, joint stability and increased muscle strength; benefits that are added to the previously known positive cardiorespiratory effects.
