The purpose of this work consisted in the construction and validation of an instrument to characterize the teaching competencies of the university mathematics professor, considering not only the theoretical approaches, but also the perceptions and beliefs of the teachers themselves, given that these conceptions are important insofar as they affect the way teachers carry out their teaching work in the classroom. It was used a three-stage methodology, which included a conceptual construction, and operational definition, and a validation of the reliability of a closed questionnaire with a Likert-type scale. As a result, a tool was obtained that can be useful to inquire about the teacher´s self-perception of various aspects of their teaching skills, which constitutes valuable information to characterize their professional performance and also continuous training processes.
