COVID-19 is a pandemic that has physical distancing as an antidote, which has changed the dynamics in social relationships; in particular it has influenced the behavior of the teaching-learning process. This descriptive study with a mixed approach aims to analyze this situation in Basic Education in Machala, Ecuador, supported by exegetical scientific research methods, content analysis, synthesis and statistics, as well as the survey technique. Among the main results are: insufficient student skills for autonomous study, limited technological skills for information management, inadequate control and help received by parents, the unavailability of technological resources and connectivity to Internet, as well as the learning style, the study habits, the responsibility in the fulfillment of the tasks of the student portfolio and the motivation for the autonomous study. For their part, teachers consider that among their limitations are technological skills, skills for the preparation of digital teaching aids, mastery of methodologies for the use of technological resources, adaptation of the program and curricular activities, the time available for provide student support and information management skills. Thus, it is concluded that there are limitations to the effective fulfillment of the emerging strategy adopted to continue the course in the context of COVID-19.
