The objective of this essay is focused on reflecting on the importance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the regional panorama and specifically in Ecuador. To this end, the role of these entities in the productive transformation in Latin America, the socioeconomic reality that they confront, with the lack of support from the governments of the region and the need for a regional integration that is capable of generate horizontal regional agreements that lead to a greater process of social inclusion and development of these entities. At the same time, it is offered how they are classified according to international organizations and their economic importance by sector in the countries of the region and the role they play in the world of employment. Finally, the characteristics of MSMEs in Ecuador, their opportunities, their challenges and the main factors that must be taken into account to avoid failures in their creation and development are addressed, as well as the experience developed at the Metropolitan University on the formation of entrepreneurial skills that allow them to give rise to sustainable enterprises.
