The current educational environment is marked by a vertiginous escalation of the need to adapt to changes in the environment. Among the main transformations that have taken place in recent years is the application of new technologies as part of the teaching and learning process. One of the theories that has shown efficacy at a global level is the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. The objective of this research is aimed at studying the scientific production around this field, identifying trends and gaps for the development of future research. To meet the stated objective, theoretical methods such as historical-logical, inductive-deductive, and synthetic analytical were used. The methodology used covers the period 1996-2022, the study units were the original materials published in the Scopus database, which included the keywords selected for the investigation. Analyzes of academic productivity, language of origin, productivity by country, by author, citation analysis, co-citation analysis, and main lines of academic production were carried out, taking into account the keyword analysis. As conclusions, it is found that most of the studies in this field are in English and the Latin American region does not have published articles on the subject in this database, which may constitute a research gap appropriate to the characteristics of the study on the region. The main dimention associate to the cognitive theory of multimedia learning are about the teaching and learning process and the study of load.
