The communicative approach emerged back in the 70s, which has revolutionized the world's foreign languages teaching. In the case of China, this theory has taken its slow steps, until now few investigative works have been devoted to the field of Spanish classroom. Therefore, this article will collect all that’s concerning the communicative approach and its application in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, which will extend from the following aspects: first, its origin and development, followed by its trajectory in China; Later, the work will concentrate to the analysis of the main obstacles this approach are facing in its development. Finally, this article will presented the main challenges and suggestions for a better application of this approach in China.
