Graduate education in Cuba emerged from the development of productive forces, education in general and higher education in particular over the years after the triumph of the Cuban revolution. It is the highest level within the national education system. It is subdivided into the System of Scientific Degrees and the System of Professional Advancement. Unlike the former, the latter is aimed at all graduates, since any of them can improve their knowledge and skills. Continuous education in general and courses of Portuguese for specific purposes take place more often within the System of Professional Advancement. Such courses are increasingly necessary given the growing need for professional advancement by cooperation groups heading for Portuguese-speaking countries; also because of the need for the acquisition of teaching or scientific categories, among other learning interests concerning the Portuguese language are very necessaries. This paper ponders upon the interconnection between such courses and the principles of continuous education, as well as their specificities and characteristics according to the requirements of portuguese language learning.
