Acoustic emission technique (EA), only used in activated carbons was used in this study to characterize the porosity of vitreous and zeolitic tuffs from El Picao (TV-P) and Caimanes (TZ-C) deposits, respectively, and manifestation of tuffs from Baracoa (TV-B). 10 ml of water and 10 g of the sample at 50 dB gain were the experimental conditions for the tuffs, determined by an experiment design 23 with the Statgraphics Centurion XV statistical program. Porous characteristics of the materials studied were defined by the classical techniques (N2 and CO2 adsorption and Hg porosimetry), for comparing results with the EA technique. The adsorptions determined by N2 and CO2 show that TV-P tuff has a greater surface area and greater pore volume while TZ-C tuff has a high microporosity with respect to the other samples. The Hg porosimetry technique showed that the vitreous tuffs have high porosity and total volume pore values of 49% and 0.44 cm3 / g, respectively. When comparing the results of EA with classical techniques, the best correlation was established with the CO2 adsorption technique, showing that EA is capable of detecting the microporosity of a material.
