Producing Ni and Co with Caron technology in Moa engenders millions of tons of black tails annually, which are dumped into the environment even containing metallic elements of economic value. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of magnetic field strengths of 21.03 kA/m (0.05 A); 40.33 kA/m (0.10 A) and 59.03 kA/m (0.15 A), on the concentration of metals in three size classes: coarse (+0.200 mm), medium (-0.200 +0.045 mm) and fine (-0.045 mm). It was obtained that in the non-magnetic product for a field intensity of 0.15 A, Zn, Cr and Al are enriched in the medium size class and Ni, Mg and SiO2 are enriched in the thick one. Fe is concentrated up to nearly 50% in the magnetic product of the medium and coarse classes for an intensity of 0.05 A. The application of a magnetic field has no effect on the concentration of metals in the fine class. It is possible to concentrate Ni up to 1.23% in non-magnetic products of particles larger than 0.045 mm, with the possibility of incorporating this element into existing extraction technology.
