Introduction:

The existence of a number of patients pending to receive a health service prescribed by a physician, due to the confrontation between the scarcity of resources and the increase in the demands for services, is known as waiting list. Waiting lists for surgical interventions are erroneously interpreted as a mismatch between the demand and supply of a procedure; if this were the case, it would be fixed with the availability of resources.

Objective:

To identify actions to reduce the surgical waiting list at the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital.

Methods:

A development research was carried out to propose a set of actions to solve the surgical waiting list at the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital in the period from 2020 to 2021.

Results:

The identification of the main factors that characterized the behavior of the surgical waiting list at the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital was organized into the following elements: legal and sociopolitical context, problems, strengths and weaknesses related to the waiting list.
