Introduction:

It is essential to know if new technologies contribute to the health and well-being of the population, more than what they cost the health system.

Objective:

To describe the importance and necessity of the economic evaluation of health technologies as a fundamental element for decision-making in the context of the National Health System.

Development:

A bibliographic review was carried out, both nationally and internationally, to search for information on the economic evaluation of technologies and the relationship that this work tool has in the health field, as an element of crucial relevance to evaluate the impacts from the use of these technologies. The economic evaluation of technologies applied to the field of health should be considered as an aspect that contributes to improving the rational and efficient use of technological resources, since it allows the corresponding technical-economic analyzes to be carried out on the costs and consequences in terms of health of the use of the different technological alternatives for the National Health System.

Conclusions:

It can be affirmed that the economic evaluation of technologies constitutes a necessary aspect to assess the rational and efficient use of these resources in health systems, with a view to being able to evaluate the impact that these technologies have to guide decision-making in the field sanitary.
