GOMES DE ANDRADE, Juliano et al. Water losses by evaporation in corn with conventional and zero tilling for different levels of dead covering. I. experimental results. Rev Cie Téc Agr [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.2, pp.60-64. ISSN 2071-0054.

The aim of this experiment was to measure the water loss by evaporation in a crop of maize cultivated in two tillage systems; conventional tillage and zero tillage with dead covering. The experiments were developed on the experimental area belonging to the Department of Rural Engineering, Federal University of Santa Maria, RS-Brazil in the period November-December 2006, since the initial stage of maize crop until the foliar area index reached values of the 2,7. Soil moisture was measured with TDR in the depths of 0-10 and 10-30cm. Three treatments with zero tillage were studied having three levels of dead coverage represented by 0, 3 and 6 t/ha of dry oat straw and a fourth treatment of conventional soil preparation. The results demonstrated a water savings of around 40% when zero tillage is used with dead coverage.

Palavras-chave : Corn evapotranspiration; zero tillage.
