Socio economic development of many semi-arid areas depends on the presence and usage of groundwater, which at times is the only source of freshwater available. More than 15% of Guatemala´s surface is conformed by zones of semi-arid areas in which quality and quantities of groundwater are of vital importance. Even though the major processes and mechanisms of aquifer recharge are well known, obtaining reliable estimates of natural recharge is difficult to obtain. These methods are based on the spatial and temporal weather variable distributions and the existence and spatial distribution of factors that determine frequency, magnitude and quality of the recharge. It follows that most of these methods produce results with high uncertainly levels.This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of recharge evaluation, at the basin with in an area of 105 km², with satisfactory results.
