A critical look to evaluation mechanisms of University excellence at international level is presented in the article, and the composition of several evaluative tools, as well as the significance of evaluation for the different sectors and users of this information. A conclusion has been got that there are several university evaluation and selection processes; however, there is no one that links their main common elements or shows the competitive advantages of Higher Education Institutions and its intellectual capital.
