Background: the ability to speak, listen, write and read correctly in higher education is essential to the performance of students during their studies at the undergraduate and as future health professionals. Objective: to develop methodological actions to contribute to the proper use of the spelling of the Spanish language through different teaching activities since the first-year of the nursing career. Methods: a development research was carried out with a qualitative approach in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences Nursing Faculty, which involved a documentary assessment with defined searching criteria. Theoretical methods were used: Analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction, and empirical ones: document analysis and survey in questionnaire form and an interview to determine methodological preparation needs of teachers for the spelling treatment. Results: according to the diagnosis made, the training programs for the Bachelor in Nursing neither contain knowledge and nor develop practical skills for the spelling treatment, the methodological work developed in the career is oriented towards general aspects of the teaching-learning process, proper of the specialty content but there are not specific tasks to work with the students spelling difficulties; so methodological actions to meet these deficiencies were developed. Conclusions: the methodological actions were assessed by specialists as relevant, necessary, applicable, useful and having a scientific methodological character, because they contribute to improve the correct use of spelling and the Spanish language in general, through the different teaching activities of the first year of the Nursing career.
