Background: the work of vocational training and professional orientation has been included among the guidelines approved by the VI Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, it integrates the contents of the profession with the educational elements of this activity. Objective: to describe the impact of the extracurricular activities of vocational training and professional orientation in the students of medical sciences of Villa Clara province, from 2006 on with the redisign of the strategy. Methods: a documental investigation was carried out in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, using as theoretical methods: analysis-synthesis and historical-logical, and empiric ones: the documental review of the 2006 redisigned strategy, reports, records, events reports, interviews to key informants, surveys to students, images and recognitions for the work done,which ere registered in the files of the Department of Vocational training and admission. Results: the students who participated in vocational training extracurricular activities interacted with different general teaching students to promote the interest for the medical sciences, they participated in events where they exchanged experiences and they showed a higher level of professional development expressed in their individual, collective, creative and responsible performance in the solution of the commended tasks. Conclusions: the vocational training extracurricular activities carried out by the students had a positive impact because they highlighted the importance of their applicability and the positive influence in their comprehensive formation, they allowed to incorporate experiences for the professional performance, to discover potentialities, to strengthen relationship with their fellow men, and they constituted an alternative of community work.
