Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive research was carried out during the 2015-2016 academic year at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences. Methods from the theoretical level were used: historical-logical, analytic-synthetic and inductive-deductive; and from the empirical level the scientific observation was used. Results: deficiencies were identified in the preparation of the history of the present illness; more than 50 % of the students were evaluated as insufficient in the performance of the regional physical exam and the neurological system. More than 40 % were classified as insufficient in the order and interpretation of the electrocardiogram.
