Background:

academic efficiency is an important indicator for the development of education aimed at seeking policies and strategies that allow meeting the objectives for the achievement of the social mission of university institutions.

Objective:

to analyze the academic efficiency in Medicine degrees from the academic year 2010-2011 to 2015-2016 and from 2011-2012 to 2016-2017; and in Dentistry from 2011-2012 to 2015-2016 and from 2012-2013 to 2016-2017 (two cohorts in each career).

Methods:

a documentary research was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences on trends in the promotion and academic efficiency in higher education, as the primary source of data were used the records of the teaching secretariat of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry as well as promotion reports of the academic courses analyzed.

Results:

in the Medicine degree promotion fluctuated from 85,53 to 94,73, with an efficiency of 51,01 and 56,72 respectively; in dentistry the promotion was above 95,41 in both cohorts and the efficiency was from 86,52 to 88,07; as a relevant result the figures of this last degree stand out for being higher.

Conclusions:

it was possible to demonstrate the academic efficiency in both degrees taking as a reference two cohorts, through statistics; they constituted important data that allowed to monitor the permanence of the students in those cycles and to project the plan of improvements and a real evaluation of such indicator.
