Abstract

CALA CALVINO, Leidys; BOSCH NUNEZ, Ana Ibis  and  DIAZ DEL MAZO, Lizel. WhatsApp as a tool for teaching Pharmacology in Dentistry during COVID-19. EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2022, vol.14, e2046.  Epub Apr 30, 2022. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background:

the contingency due to the COVID-19 pandemic imposed the temporary suspension of face-to-face classes at all educational levels in Cuba, turning the electronic divide into a learning opportunity.

Objective:

to describe the use of Whats App as a tool for the development of teaching activities of the Pharmacology subject in the Dentistry degree during COVID-19.

Methods:

an educational research work was carried out at the Dentistry Faculty from Santiago de Cuba University of Medical Sciences, from March to October 2020 using theoretical and empirical methods. WhatsApp was used as a tool for the development and culmination of the teaching activities of the Pharmacology subject, creating a collaborative group made up of 32 students who were in the second year of the Dentistry degree, two teachers and a director.

Results:

Infographics and various resources were made that supported the teaching-learning process, facilitating the flow of information and guidance on the platform. Systematization of the content, learning around professional topics/problems, application of curricular strategies and the different forms of evaluation were evidenced; elements of cooperation and collaboration were manifested.

Conclusions:

the use of WhatsApp as an alternative, innovative and collaborative tool allowed the development of the teaching activities of the Pharmacology subject in the Dentistry degree during COVID-19, so as to achieve the objectives required in higher medical education through the use of these platforms, a paradigm shift towards mobile m-Learning is necessary.
