Abstract

LOPEZ BARRERO, Yenier et al. Exercises to strengthen oral expression in students from Granma Medical University. EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2022, vol.14, e2030.  Epub May 30, 2022. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background:

oral expression in English is considered a very useful communication skill for medical students when performing doctor-patient and doctor-doctor interviews, especially in the field of international collaboration in English-speaking countries.

Objective:

to develop a system of exercises to strengthen oral expression at an A2 level as established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for 5th year students of the Medicine degree at Granma University of Medical Sciences.

Methods:

a study was carried out at the Yara Municipal University school, Granma in the 1st semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis, and the systemic approach; empirical ones: documentary analysis, pedagogical test; the pre-experiment in its pre-test and post-test variant; and statistics ones.

Results:

in the documentary analysis of the study program and methodological guidelines it was found that this skill is superficially treated; greater importance is given to the writing of case reports. The pedagogical test showed a low level when using the communicative functions in the ward round and in the doctor-doctor interview, due to the insufficient vocabulary used by the students.

Conclusions:

the application of the proposal contributed to the development of oral expression in the students under study, which was confirmed in the comparative results of the applied pedagogical test.
