Resumen

The objective of this work is to found the theoretical bases which support the importance of independent work in the Dentistry major teaching process, as well as aspects related to its conception, requirements and forms of application, which teachers need to adequately handle to guarantee these future professionals quality. A bibliographic review on the subject was made and the following conclusions were reached: independent work is an important factor to stimulate the cognitive independence of future professionals. Then their improvement requires a teacher greater professionalism in his work. For the organization of independent work, it is essential to take into account the stages of human activity: planning, orientation, execution, control and evaluation. Independent work is a means of organizing methodologically students’ independent cognitive activity which is expressed through a set of tasks that can be developed during the teaching and learning activity, as well as in any of the forms of teaching organization.
