Abstract

HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ, Yoan Samir; GARCIA, Miliada Hernández; SANCHEZ, Suset García  and  RODRIGUEZ, Alejandro García. THE BASQUE-NAVARRE ELITE AND ITS SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION IN THE CIENFUEGOS REGION, CUBA (1880-1920). Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2019, vol.11, n.3, pp. 104-110.  Epub Sep 01, 2019. ISSN 2218-3620.

Basque-Navarre immigration does not constitute, in any of the stages of the Spanish immigration movement to the Island, a predominant group from the quantitative point of view. Despite of this, in Cuba, and in Cienfuegos in particular, they stood out for their active participation in the economy, politics and society. The present work addresses the socio-economic contribution of the Basque-Navarrese elite in the Cienfuegos territory between 1880 and 1920. To this end, the strategies of social mobility and the socio-economic actions performed by the most relevant members within this migratory group in the region are analyzed. During this lapse, Sotero Escarza Urioste, Agustín Goytisolo Lezarzaburu, Domingo Nazábal Leicegoyena, Nicolás GamboaGorostiaga, and especially, Nicolás Castaño Capetillo, made important socio-economic efforts that were, in many cases, determined by networks and family alliances. All this marked they incorporation and consolidation within the Cienfuegos economic elite between the referred periods.
