El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar los tipos fundamentales de turismo existente, así como su relevancia para el Ecuador. Se empleó el método de análisis de contenido y analítico-sintético para identificar los puntos de vista de diversos autores sobre el tema. Desde las perspectivas del turismo sostenible, responsable y ético, se precisan los rasgos esenciales del turismo rural, el ecoturismo, el agroturismo, el turismo cultural, el turismo gastronómico, el turismo religioso, que configuran el amplio espectro de formas de desenvolver esta importante actividad en la actualidad.

This paper is to specify different fundamental types of existing tourism, as well as its relevance to Ecuador. The method of content analysis and analytical-synthetic was used to clarify the points of view of various authors on the subject. From the perspectives of sustainable, responsible and ethical tourism, the essential features of rural tourism, ecotourism, agrotourism, cultural tourism, gastronomic tourism, religious tourism are specified, which are part of the broad spectrum of ways to develop this relevant activity today.
